Legendary leader of The Supreme Angels dies in North Carolina on 25th February

ONE OF the legendary figures in gospel quartet music, Howard Hunt of Slim And The Supreme Angles died in Dillon, South Carolina on 25th February. Elder Hunt was the pastor at the Deliverance Temple Church of God In Christ in Dillon. Born in 1935 to sharecroppers, at 17 Hunt left his home town of Walnut Grove, Mississippi and moved to New Orleans to work on a sight seeing boat. He later worked for a plumbing company and at a candy factory. It was in Milwaukie that Hunt first formed The Supreme Angels and in 1957 the group began recording for Nashboro Records. In more recent times Slim And The Supreme Angels recorded for Malaco Records. The group's best know recordings such as "Shame On You" and "Death Of The Beautiful Lady" were hits on gospel radio. Said DA Johnson, director of Malaco Records gospel division, "It is sad to lose another legend of gospel music. The roots of gospel music are embedded in the quartet sound and Slim has been a large part of that history. His new album, 'The Judgment', is part of our Yes! Quarter campaign. Though he will be missed on the 2007 tour, his music will stand to honour him in his passing."
