In hindsight I was probably exceedingly harsh in only awarding Yvonne’s debut album ‘Horizon Searching’ a measly 9 out of 10 in these pages a few issues ago! (I think he’s being ironic! Ed) These four songs have been recorded to raise money and awareness for the work of the Open Door Trust in Glasgow who work with the city’s homeless, alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes and prisoners. Over the years Yvonne has played a few benefits for the charity both in her own right and also in the days when she was part of the much missed Land. The opening song is based on the charity’s founder Maureen McKenna’s autobiography which became a bestseller in the Scottish Christian bookstores and the EP is dedicated to her memory after she passed away last year. All four songs are previously unreleased and two are from Yvonne’s own pen while the other pair have been written by David Lyon, the former Electrics man who married Yvonne last summer. The sound and production values are similar to the feel of ‘Horizon Searching’ even if as a whole this EP doesn’t quite scale the same heights as its illustrious predecessor… but then few releases do! Worth getting if you are already a fan of Yvonne and wish to add to the collection and if you want to support the work of the Open Door Trust. Here’s hoping it’s not too long before both of Yvonne’s recent projects get the nationwide or even international distribution they deserve and more concert promoters book her for their events. Marked purely on the basis of its musical merits (and remembering that I’m a harsh reviewer) and not taking account of where the money from this one will end up this is still highly recommended.
