With an album entitled 'A Thousand Questions Why', Scottish damsel Yvonne Lyon appears to be baiting pedantic music writers like myself, simply begging them to scribe sarcastic comments about her latest release. However, unfortunately for this caustic hack, the Glaswegian's third studio album is a delightfully executed set of whimsical folk-pop. Aided by a heady collection of contributors on a variety of instruments, Lyon is able to add much depth to her original songs. "Fourteen Weeks" is a stunning centrepiece, as breathy backing vocals compliment Lyon as she welcomes a new baby to the world. "Life can be beautiful, if you have love," sings Lyon, and you'd have to be a pretty dour person to disagree with her. However, the album is not all shoe-staring melancholia; the opener "Everything's Fine" jumps along with a jaunty guitar and glockenspiel, whilst the oddly-named "Monkey Puzzle Tree" is a summery folk-jam. A bit of a shame then, that Lyon finishes proceedings with a rather lacklustre cover of the traditional "Down To The River To Pray". But elsewhere there are plenty of balmy musical delights.
