An initial listen to this debut release by the band from the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota might have you writing them off as yet another run-of-the-mill metalcore act. Indeed, there is a full on intensity about their music full of chugging riffs and a vocal style that rasps through the 10 tracks on offer. On further investigation however, there is variety and invention in unsuspected places. The listener is treated to instrumental interludes that are reminiscent of Demon Hunter's "45 Days" and clean vocals on tracks such as "Surface" do not sound out of place. The title track is an example of the best of this group, combining a wash of background guitars embellishing a driven melodic lead that gives way to a tight breakdown. The lyrics are forthright as the track closes amidst shouts, "This is where I end and grace begins, this is where I end and you begin." There are plenty of glimpses here that this band are willing to try to broaden their sound and appeal. If you like your metal full-on but with a few twists it may be worth seeking out 'Atonement'.
