As a well-established outfit, these three brothers from Westminster, Maryland already have four studio albums under their belts. With this, there most recent independent release, we are introduced to a fresh take on some of their classic tracks. This live recording was captured on the Scott Stapp's (Creed) Live & Unplugged 2017 Tour. Each of the four cuts is stripped back to a raw and emotive acoustic version and played in front of a sold out crowd. Opening with a driving, bluesy "Empty Grave", throaty electric instruments are replaced with sumptuous acoustic guitars that feature bags of reverb and attack. This is matched with the raw and slightly strained vocals of Jeremy Willet as he finishes off what is easily the most accomplished track on the recording. Following this, I found that whilst I enjoyed the new acoustic versions they did lose some of the energy of the originals. On top of this, there were at times, as in "Disaster", some moments where wavering vocals were exposed. Throughout the recording there are some moving touches of vulnerability that are reminiscent of Ed Sheeran and Aaron Gillespie. These bring an ethereal quality to the overall sound. Production standards are incredibly high and this adds poignancy to "Death By Surprise" which reflects on the sudden loss of a loved one. Available free on Noisetrade, this short recording is an excellent introduction to an outfit that produce a mature brand of AOR. On top of this, any donations go towards the charity Rise Against Hunger in its work of relief for Hurricane Harvey.
