The first recording to come out of new independent company, Broken Records, First Heart was produced on a minuscule budget, yet doesn't suffer for it. For the most part at least, Tony et al (he is backed by an obviously talented band on 10 of the 12 songs) adopts a position not a million miles away from the likes of Phil And John. With a distinctive, soothing voice, Tony tackles a variety of subjects, covering the crucified Christ ("Omega"), simple worship ("I Will Worship You"), poetic contemplation ("Windy Side Of Your Welcome Mat") and the relationship of God with a suffering world ("The First Heart To Break"). While Tony plays acoustic guitar imaginatively, there are also highlights from other musical styles. "From A Father To His Son" is vaguely reminiscent of The The, with its slightly distorted vocal and upbeat tempo. But the track that I find myself singing is "Upside Down". Sounding a little like Eden Burning's "Big Regret", yet not at all derivative, this song contains the best lyrical hook I've heard in a long time: "Feel the car skidding out of control" coupled with "Ain't no crash but a victory roll." Marvellous. All in all, a great debut!

An amazing album, Tony really knows how to write and play. Chilled and inspiring, a real credit!
