As long-in-tooth Cross Rhythms readers will know, The Predators, or The Preds as their fans knew them, were a much loved bunch of rock music evangelists who from their formation in the late '70s were a key force in taking the Gospel into Britain's pubs and clubs. Last year they surprisingly reformed and this album demonstrates there is plenty of fire left in the vintage rockers. I was a bit taken aback by the lo-fi production, but once I started paying attention 'Roundabout' delivered its hooks and wouldn't let go. The Preds have been described as New Wave in the past, but I would say that this album is more like garage rock though on different tracks there are echoes of early Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper. Also, the use of keyboards gives the band a hint of a prog rock feel in places. Lyrically, they are very strong, covering a wide range of issues combining insight and intelligence with a street level rawness.
