After their two releases on Pilgrim Records in the early '80s, Manchester's Predators lost some momentum and after line up changes ended up working as an indie band. Consequently, I missed this release in the '80s and only discovered its existence last year. 'Offensive' saw the band move away from their classic guitar-driven sound and instead they embraced '80s synth sounds. Consequently, this set seems to sound more dated than their other releases. But then, my misgivings might have to do with the lo-fi production of the album. Having said that, there are still some moments of glory on here with the throbbing opening cut "Built On Sand" a winner with the combination of synths and some blistering guitar work. Lyrically the band still pull no punches and they still know how to pen emotionally engaging songs like "Don't Laugh At Me" and "Fallen Angel". However, overall even on songs like "Lies" where they try to pull out the production stops, the passing of time has not been kind to this release.
