This 20-track compilation charting the progress of the South African punk outfit (with borrowed drummer, currently Phil, from the Thumper Punk stable) makes a high energy sound with shouted lyrics packed with truth and fun. "These Grey Hairs" is a powerful breakneck speed opener with wise words shouted vehemently extolling the virtues of age; "This City" is a back-handed tribute to Cape Town which increases in guitar-packed, drum-fuelled intensity as David Emmerson screams "There's nowhere else I'd rather be"; and "Soli Deo Gloria" (Glory To God Alone) features J-son's piercing voice and is a passionate tribute to a merciful, loving and gracious God. Throughout the album the lyrics are sprinkled with Scripture and "Mammon" begins with David quoting Matthew 6:24 before the song moves up several gears. Similarly, "Axios" (which is Greek for "deserving of" or "worthy of") features a boldly voiced Psalm 150. Then for something really left field, they offer "For The Love of Hippos" with a screaming refrain "Hippos can't skate." All in all, 'Old Dog, New Tricks' is an exciting reminder of punk rock's ongoing appeal.
