The Honey Thieves have been around a good few years, hail from Scotland, and they indulge in rootsy pop with mandolins and fiddles. These four songs range from the guitar driven pop of the caustic "Goodbye Mr Jones" to the whimsical folksy "Charlie Chaplin Made Me Laugh" which is designed as a lighter waving end of concert ballad. In between its mandolins ahoy for "Flash Cars & Movie Stars" and "Tomorrow Might Not Be Like Yesterday" is driving rootsy flavoured pop with mandolin and violin working in tandem. Singer Peter Semple is a shrewd observer and these songs have depth and a conscience which make them interesting. Soundwise I have to admit to being a little disappointed since the band's reputation had preceded them and my anticipation wasn't fulfilled by what was delivered. All very pleasant and well arranged it's just that musically none of this is very original. The Honey Thieves make good rootsy pop without really setting my soul on fire.
