The Overcomer film was released in the US last year and, in the States, has been a Christian movie hit. The film tells the story of a high school baseball coach who takes over a cross-border country programme with only one runner. This album features both music from and inspired by the movie. Interspersed with instrumental score pieces are contemporary songs featuring big names in CCM. An obvious choice included here is the former American Idol contestant Mandisa's 2013 album title track "Overcomer" which still sounds fresh against the more recent openers "Enough" (Koryn Hawthorne) and Casting Crowns' "Even When You're Running". I especially enjoyed the Bieber-sounding "Known" by Tauren Wells, with its smooth vocal delivery and simple, but very effective acoustic guitar backing. As beautiful as they are, you will probably find yourself skipping over the instrumental scores searching for the musical treasures within but, as soundtracks go, this is more engaging than many.
