A debut album from Glasgow's Superhero only proves how far the band have developed since the release of their two EPs. A coming of age album sees the band spreading their wings and making atmospheric rock in the style of Travis or Coldplay so this ends up being more mellow than you'd suspect with sudden bursts of energy as the band raise the intensity levels. This pattern happens on a lot of the material here which makes for an interesting ride. Guitarist Pete Morrison writes the songs and he's done a good job creating intriguing lyrics and guitar soaked arrangements. Highlights for me include "Pre-Destiny" which has a compelling emotional intensity as singer Tim Cheshire cries out for God to take him to another level. That intensity is also present elsewhere as Tim's vulnerable vocals communicate the suspicion that there's more going on than we can see on "I Try". The opener "LH2FLY" is a powerful, anthemic start to the proceedings, whilst the title cut is a simple reminder of the life changing truth that the God whose splendour burns with awesome bright light is the same God who is with us in every moment bringing healing. The band are working full time with a commitment to ministry in whatever setting they play. From the clubs of Glasgow to churches, festivals and youth events in Scotland, they re beginning to make a name for themselves. (Why not book them for a gig and see for yourself!). Clearly 'Burn & Dazzle' is a significant step forward. It's a marker for the band in 2000 and the band deserve to feel proud of what they've achieved. I'm excited though because, much as I love this album, their best work still lies ahead of them!
