This is a beautifully crafted rant disguised as garage, full of wordy conversational songs, musical arguments and breathless observation. Superchic(k) address so many of the issues we adults pretend we have left behind. The lyrics pulsate with life lived at the bitchy end: how not to notice acne, how to fight post-self realisation depression, choose the next sorority/prom queen, how not to cut your wrists...that sort of thing. It's where, in youth cultures, faith and survival mix - and yes, it's very USA. That's it's strength; I get the impression that it's parody of sorts and obviously a hoot 'live' (you are instructed to sing along to the lyrics in the brackets) yet I was drawn in to the very real dramas being acted out in the songs. The wonderful bit is that you don't really mind the moralising, as the whole effect perfectly captures the preoccupations of late teen years and offers hope for the 20s. Finally, the truth about high school angst.
