In my book Steve Camp is one of the biggest talents in the rock gospel world as well as having a razor-edge to his songwriting which, though occasionally veers dangerously close to one-dimensional hectoring (how many more time can he lay into the Church for its lack of spiritual or social fervour?), is none the less searingly powerful. This 'best of set called from his last few albums has plenty of bite though the choice of songs seems a little arbitrary and I can think of at least three Camp minor-classics which could have graced this one. But if you've not get many albums by the gritty voiced rocker, like your rock with a nice live sound raunchiness and want songs which shout at you to get out there and do something, this compilation should be investigated.
Also reviewed in February 2007:
The songs on this disc (released in 1990) are taken from the albums which the veteran American singer/songwriter released between 1983 and 1988, with a couple of extra songs ("Run To The Battle" and "Forgive Me, Forgive You") thrown in. It's typically '80s rock - swirling arrangements and a huge sound - but the message of such songs as "Living In Laodicea" and "Surrender Your Heart" is timeless. There's a strong thread of social justice that runs through many of the songs, too, with "Do You Feel Their Pain?" and "Don't Tell Them Jesus Loves Them" demonstrating a keen awareness of the problems connected with HIV/Aids (then a relatively new issue for the churches). Steve's voice and his energy drive the lyrics home with sincerity and integrity. It's a rather dated sound now, but still an urgent message.

I have this great collection of Steve Camp songs in my huge
ccm library. I luv "Surrender Your Heart" the duet with
Suzanne Norman, great collaboration! "Stranger to Holiness"
made a connection the first time I heard it; incidentally
both of the songs mentioned are from his 1985 lp "Shake me
to wake me". There is a new version of his 1981 radio hit
"Run to the Battle"; I prefer the '81, a long time favorite
tune! Thanks to Steve for soo many great songs through the
years!! GOD Bless! -Don
