As far as Cross Rhythms is concerned, Steve Camp has long been one of the most arresting and impassioned talents in American Christian music and apart from a misjudged attempt at doing middle of the road praise music, he’s made consistently excellent albums as well as being a thorn in the flesh of the Nashville CCM industry, boldly critiquing its excesses. Now he returns with a fine new album. The opener “Why, Why, Why” shows he’s lost none of his touch with powerful lyrics (“Twin Towers falling down right out of the sky/Why, why, why/Texas mother dooms her children to die/Why, why, why/Whole generation lost in AIDS and cocaine/Why, why, why/People believe they die and come back and live like Shirley MacLaine/Why, why, why”). Able to cover tender, haunting ballads, dramatic songs of prophetic resonance and punchy pop rock opuses, throughout the singer/songwriter exudes gritty passion. A quality album from one of American Christian music’s most important figures.
