St Aldate’s fronts onto one of the busiest streets in the county, according to the sleevenotes, and this recording was made at the time a new glass entrance was opened up. Certainly on the evidence of this album, what’s going on inside the church is showing distinct signs of life. It’s nice to see a variety of songs from differing sources and not the tired old favourites. Michelle Modica (one of numerous vocalists featured here) does a brilliant job with Vicky Beeching’s “Your Voice (Awesome God)” and there are some interesting musical settings of liturgy from the Church of England’s Common Worship Services And Prayers, alongside songs by David Ruis, Tim Hughes and Phatfish’s Mike Sandeman. Creditable arrangements (although some solo instruments need reigning in a bit), spirit-led performances and sympathetic production add up to a set that I’d have no trouble recommending to the discerning worshipper.
