Even with Ann Nesby moving on, the world's most outstanding vocal group proves that the sum of the parts is bigger than any individual. This new set of songs is a rich eclectic collection of influences drawing on a variety of black music traditions. Lyrically the songs have a global aim -to encourage the healing of the human spirit. Nothing like aiming big is there? And do they succeed? You betcha! A musically uplifting experience with so much to rave about. Edited highlights include the single "Spirit" featuring the laid back rapping of Craig Mack is an infectious delight; the groovy "Hold On (Change Is Coming)" should be available on the NHS to pick you up if you're feeling down. Salt N Pepa guest on "Hold On (Don't Let Go)" and the Gamble & Huff classic "Love Train" is executed with aplomb and an apt choice of cover considering the album's overall concept. The sweet ballad "God Cares" gives a different musical vibe and that's the beauty of this album, the breathtaking diversity! "So Far Away" is a trip into easy listening territory, you could almost hear it as a soundtrack to some swinging '60s movie. Set pieces like the vocal virtuosity of "Blackness Blues" and the medley of negro spirituals both continue to highlight the band's commitment to the music of their roots. Whether it's acappella, African, R&B or mellow dance vibes Sounds Of Blackness wipe the floor.
