If you've been a bit slow to join the party, let me advise that Miami's Martymar and F.E.R.N., previously known as Social Club, have built up an ever-growing band of followers with their unique blend of hard-hitting spiritual polemic and off the wall humour. Now that Capitol CMG, having belatedly dipped a toe in the ocean of Christian hip-hop with NF and found that it sells, have wisely signed up one of gospel hip-hop's most original acts. The guys grab their major label opportunity eagerly and though some purists may object to the auto-tuned vocal hooks, their flow on tracks like "Wavemaster" - aimed at all those who feel unloved in this world - and "Marriage Goals" - a courageous track pointing out the destructive force of our sex-before-marriage culture - are fine. The killer cut under their new name is the title track. Built around a sung, autotuned hook by Chris Batson, it begins by asking questions like "have you ever felt like suicide was the only way to go?" followed by the response "I didn't think so." Here's a song addressed to the misfit generation. As a calling card for a full album, no doubt to be released in the months ahead, this EP delivers.
