Oooh, this EP is cosy! Simon's been gigging up and down the country since the release of his 'Generous Love' album and often his solo guitar and vocal performances have included a variety of cover versions. Here he chooses to record four of his favourites for us plus a re-visitation to a tune from his debut, a stripped down version of "All You Have Done" which just goes to prove that a great song is a great song, no matter the context! There's one new original, "Broken Down", which covers the provocative subject of the breakdown of church relationships. Stripped down is the best way to describe all the music here although there are occasional subtle piano and string synth embellishments, which add to the relaxed mood. These are respectful covers of Wes King's "Carolyn" and Paul Field's "As Long As You Believe In Me" but the outstanding tune here is the old Eric Carmen hit "All By Myself" which only serves to highlight how much Simon's voice has improved since his debut album. Only one blot to these ears which is Julie Mackenzie Dunn's "Free" which sounds a bit old fashioned to these ears! Other than that, there is plenty to enjoy in these intimate recordings.
