This album has the potential to become a truly enormous Christian music hit both here in the UK (in case there’s anybody who’s not heard, this effervescent foursome work the Milton Keynes schools) and in the USA (it was the Reunion Records Christian music giant who financed this-scintillatingly produced set). The man behind the recording desk is of course Zarc Porter, but the creative talent behind the World Wide Message Tribe has wisely steered to vistas beyond four-on-the-floor dance city. Here we find the girls wrapping their sweet, and at times soulful, vocal chords around hook laden pop, ditties demonstrating that Britney Spears doesn’t have it all her own way, in funky, frothy delights which eat away listener resistance. Take the little track with its jangling guitar intro moving into a snappy mid tempo declaration that this is the time to pray and do it right. If you want something a bit more R&B try the sistahs exhorting us to try a “Higher Love” with almost a TLC groove complete with rap. Or that new mix of “I Believe In You” (wasn’t Cross Rhythms extraordinarily remiss in failing to review the deliciously hooky song which the group had on their debut single in 1999?). And if you’re still not won over, try the lifting “Shine” with its lugubrious hip hop derived groove. There’s even a delightful pop recreation of the oldie “I’m Never Gonna Give You Up”, first heard on the Mark Pennell’s cassette ‘One Of These Days’, then popularised by 65 DBA and now back for a third time. ‘Do It Right’ offers 12 songs so it’s value for money if you’re a teenager or know one who’s into the sounds of today’s pop radio.
