Hailing from the same hometown as Sixpence None The Richer (Austin, Texas), this lively bunch of Mexicans couldn't be further from Leigh Nash and co stylistically. What they peddle on their debut disc is a lively brand of Latin pop. But if that conjures up images of Ricky Martin minus the raunchy lyrics, then think again. As well as being a fair bit younger than Mr Martin, Salvador (aged 18 to 29) also display some serious musical chops (although any possible details of strategically implanted session musos are omitted from my promo copy), stirring in undiluted blues, gospel and soul influences. Singer Nick Gonzales has a powerful, thick voice while fluid guitar solos, infectious rhythms, bright horns and a phat funk bass are employed superbly, belying the group's inexperience. As their name (Spanish for Saviour) and their history (church worship band roots, Nicky Cruz crusade openers) suggest, Salvador's lyrics are in-yer-face and Bible-based - which could rankle with those who demand a more original approach (is a new version of "David Danced" really necessary?). This outfit are just doing what they love best and doing it very well; there's no denying the fantastic, shuffle-enhancing qualities of tracks like "Ain't God Good" which make this CD a soul-lifter in every sense.
