Following their "'most played on Christian Radio 2007"' single "Undo" (American radio that is) and a debut album which sold well despite criticism that they overused session musicians and had a sound derivative of other bands there was hope that this release would see this young band from Birmingham, Alabama finding their own feel. With their youngest members now freed up from high school and the addition of a fifth member they have come some way in that direction. The first track "There Is Nothing" starts with an uplifting "swirly guitar", synth and bass opening which leads into a declaration of all that God can do, the title track, more mellow but just as powerful in proclaiming God's greatness continues this theme of wonder and praise which carries on throughout, "Holy One" is an uplifting keyboard and strings affair alongside solid bass and guitar, the synth opening of "Freedom Begins Here" leads into a full blown pomp pop call to "let your freedom begin" by letting go of those things which keep us from God. Musically this band sound like "small scale stadium rock" - with the echo and power chords which merit large arenas. For me, this brand of power pop works well, the band's songwriting and arrangements are simple though not simplistic, and though some might say that some of their songs sound like Chris Tomlin or MercyMe there is enough originality and passion in this recording to make 'Wonder Of The World' well worth getting.
