Reviewed by Tom Lennie Clearly, the series of events in 2008 known as "The Lakeland Healing Outpouring" quickly turned Roy Fields into a worship leader of international, indeed global, repute. And it's apparent that the musician is taking full advantage of it. He has already come out with a number of live albums and DVDs from those exciting months the Florida sensation lasted. Roy has also released a 'Live In The UK' disc, and a documentary DVD of the movement. Meantime, there's a couple of soon to be released recordings in the pipe-line - one live from Toronto, Canada, the other live from his recent Australian tour. On top of all this, a global tour is planned for 2010, plus a major crusade in Fiji, etc. The present Kingsway release is a compilation of selected tracks from the live projects of just a year ago, these, according to his website, picked from his first two Lakeland projects (or from his first three according to the sleevenotes). There's nothing particularly remarkable about the song selection on 'Rain Down' - a mixture of his own songs plus a few others, including two from Delirious? - nor about the musicianship that delivers them. What makes this set special is Roy's commandeering worship leading. Perhaps Lakeland released something new in him. Either way, this guy carries a BIG, passionate sound - call it "anointing" if you wish - which seems to just ooze from him. What it does is turn what would otherwise be a fairly run-of-the-mill worship set into a powerful, moving and thoroughly engaging experience of praise and adoration.

For many, Roy’s will be a familiar face already. While events at Lakeland, Florida were broadcast to a global audience of over 1 million – including unprecedented coverage on God TV and pretty much all over the internet – Roy was the worship leader who had the skills and sensitivity to help guide hearts and heads to God. And then… well, we all know what happened next.
Yet history has shown God to be bigger than events, bigger than people and bigger than our failings. So as one chapter ended, another has begun for Roy Fields. His albums ‘We Are The Generation’ and ‘Less of Me’ have connected with tens of thousands of listeners, and he and his wife, Melanie, are already travelling the world as evangelists. |
