Take three best selling worship albums, ‘Jesus Is Alive’ (1991), ‘Lift Him Up’ (1993) and ‘God Is Able’ (1995) and package them together in a box for a bargain price of £19.99. When Cross Rhythms originally reviewed these albums they received fairly enthusiastic reviews. Indeed, at the time of its release ‘Jesus Is Alive’ was very much a groundbreaking effort, bringing in elements of black church call and response fervour and funky R&B-tinged accompaniments to the stylised MOR choir and worship leader sounds of most Hosanna! Music albums of the time. There are still some exciting and soul lifting moments here. But unfortunately Ron’s approach to worship now seems somewhat theatric and overblown and not all the songs here, despite some fine playing from top musos like Justo Almario and Alex Acuna, stand the test of time. Also, it’s disappointing that no sleevenote or special booklet have been added to the package.
