Birmingham-based Roger Jones has been writing Christian musicals for decades, and was busy through 2004 touring India and Canada with Wildfire,- his story of the biblical Stephen. Recorded live in concert, here is his take of the event-filled account of David in 11 songs, with minimal narration by Don Maclean of Radio 2 (and Crackerjack!) fame. Most tunes are chirpy, singalong types with slightly annoying programming. My favourites are "The Lord's My Shepherd" (contender for piece of prose most often set to music) and "I Will Bless The Lord". Some others tend to be a tad simplistic and corny. Best track of all is the more subdued "The Mighty Are Fallen" with its fine choral content and elegant string section. Perhaps more suited to children than adults, this would be a great treat to see performed on stage. In mere audio form however, there's little that makes you want to press "repeat".
