Creating a blend of melodic heavy metal with power and progressive elements, this New Jersey outfit have been together for nearly 15 years and this release marks their third full length outing. In the same way that the band's name mixes the surnames of the two leading members, 'IJOS' creates a mix of metal sounds that drive along this classic sounding album. From the dynamic speed of the title track to some quieter ballads, Rod Rivera's guitar work features heavily throughout. He has a style that combines rhythm, melody and breakneck soloing. This is matched by a powerful vocalist in Johnny Bomma who delivers with a theatrical style that only occasionally drifts into an '80s cliché, as in the heavily effected refrain of "The Maker". Lyrically, Rivera Bomma offer straightforward gospel lyrics without obscure references, sometimes appearing a little clunky. It is obvious that these experienced performers are first rate musicians, but they have been let down on the production front with the guitars sounding a little muddy and an almost non-existent bass section. Consequently the two strongest tracks on the recording are the two ballads. "Via Dolorosa", would you believe a Sandi Patti cover, and "In My Dreams" sound more current and sharp with the stripped down feel of the mixes. So overall the album is a solid package of well written songs but lacks a crisp sound and at times seems a little too dated.
