This Grammy-nominated album from 2007 is a gem which, rather mysteriously only received a seven square review when the standard release was picked over by the CR reviews team. This deluxe edition, as well as the biting rock of the original release, also includes a bonus DVD crammed with an impressive live concert, music videos, behind the scenes documentary and band blogs from the road. If you haven't heard of Red, this would be the place to start, this CD will be getting repeat plays from me. The album features plenty of driving, staccato guitars against soaring vocals and excellently orchestrated strings. And real strings too from the Prague Philharmonic. This is a highly produced, well executed album with instantly memorable songs. Frontman Michael Barnes has a powerful voice capable of screaming with the best of them, but for the most part melodic and heartfelt. And the rest of the band are more than capable, but never overplay: the song is king. This may not be something you'd play on a Sunday morning, but it is something you can worship through. Listen to "Already Over Part 2", the penultimate track - you can hear one man singing his worship to God.
