A year or two ago South Africa-based Réanna went down a storm at Spring Harvest. Reviews frequently compared her with Alanis Morrisette. That is partly understandable - there is a certain similarity of vocal tone and sometimes her rockier songs suddenly explode, like "You Oughta Know". In CCM terms, better comparisons might be with Jillian or early Margaret Becker circa "Never For Nothing". Certainly the lyrical content is rather more positive than Morrisette (notwithstanding her last, less cynical studio CD). This is testimony music - both to those who have and have not discovered God's love. A particularly gripping song is her paean to the Holy Spirit, "Send Your Fire". If there is a let-down, it's the ponderous AOR ballads, and the CD closes with three consecutive five-minute slowies. So it runs out of steam at the end - but before that, there is plenty of steam.
