This is the first yuletide offering from the British songwriting collective and pretty good it is too. Producers Matt and Dan Weeks know how to put together a modern pop rock sound while the vocalists here offer easy-on-the-ear readings of the songs and avoid the clichés and jingle bells. The songsmiths represented here also do their bit and avoid references to the jolly bearded one (no, not me). In fact, few songs could reflect the incarnation better than the opener "In The Beginning" while the female-led "Listen To The Sound" is both catchy and anthemic. Another song to be investigated by those tired of the predictable carols is "Praise The God" with another excellent vocal, this one I think from Sarah Bird. Best of all is "See The Star", penned by Matt Osgood, which has the legs to be around for years to come and skillfully manages to make the familiar images - angels praising the Saviour's birth, amazed shepherds, wise men bringing their treasures to the King - sound fresh. With a husky, expressive vocal and a soaring arrangement, "See The Star" is the best new Christmas song I've heard this year. Congrats to the RESOUNDworship team.
