Reviewed by Trevor Kirk Yes folks, Phil Driscoll is back! The gravelly voiced trumpet playing jazz/blues veteran releases his first new project since 1999's excellent 'Plugged In', and it's a good value project too. If the pre-release copy that the Greybearded One sent me is anything to go by, it'll be over 75 minutes of music, and 17 tracks, so Phil's fans will be happy. Those fans will know what to expect, plenty of that voice and that horn, and a mix of styles - some jazz, some blues, some gospel. The publicity blurb that accompanied the CD mentions two tracks that are destined for radio single release: "I Will Dance", written by Lenny LeBlanc, and "Salute", which is a Driscoll original, and whilst the first should garner inspirational airplay worldwide, the second is very much a patriotic thing, focusing on the sacrifices of American service personnel. Listening to the pre-release, there's a definite variableness in the production values - some are obviously studio cuts, others sound very live - but on the whole, the thing sounds good.
