How do you classify a rock orientated, acoustic singer/songwriter with alt pop influences who's into hip-hop and dancehall sounds? We've called Paul Wright "rock" but just about any other classification would do. Paul’s full length album is fresh and laid back with sound comparable to the same kind of wordplay rap ala Jack Johnson and the great sense of melody ala John Mayor. He manages to incorporate a wide range of influences, from reggae and progressive pop, to pure hip-hop expression. The good times vibe of ‘Fly Away’ is easy to get lost in. There hasn't been an artist this enjoyable in a long time. There is hardly anything here to complain about, except that the disc often gets repetitive and lengthy with many overly extended choruses. For the thinking man, Wright's lyrics go beneath the surface enough times to give us the goods from his heart. Wright has a lot to say, whether he’s free-flowing about a girl he digs, or penning thoughtful ballads like “Where’s Daddy”, a song full of heartfelt lyrics about a son living in a broken home without daddy. You shouldn't be distracted by all the extra fluff, as there is still enough musical and lyrical depth to make ‘Fly Away’ more than just ear candy. He makes it a priority to make feel good music while sometimes offering heavy weight, but simple lyrics. Personally, I'm glad for the simplicity Wright brings on "Brighter": “It’s getting brighter and brighter.../My burdens getting lighter and lighter.../Praise Jesus, Hallelujah.” Paul Wright’s debut LP ‘Fly Away’ is fresh. The title track has a great acoustic groove and a simple, stripped down sound. It is exciting to have such a diverse and original artist like Paul Wright within the world of Christian music. This album offers something for everyone, from the young fan looking for the beat and hook, to anyone jaded by average, bland music, looking for something fresh and original. ‘Fly Away’ is a refreshing listen every time. This debut LP promises good days for Mr Wright and the new generation singer/songwriter.
