Regular Cross Rhythms radio listeners will know the track "In Jesus ftg Elvis Chambers" featured on this album. 'Word & Man' is London-based Deacon's third album and continues his eclectic mix of R&B, reggae and gospel. There are all sorts here, even in one song. "In Jesus" is a joyous gospel romp that gives way to a cool rap over a rousing guitar solo. "Pass It Round (Greatest Love Of All)" then lets the reggae side out before moving on to "Sunshine Streets" soulful jazz. There is only one non-original track on the album, a smooth cover of Billy Preston's "That's The Way (God Planned It)". Owen mixes worship, teaching and storytelling into his songwriting, all supported by excellent melodies and arrangements with some great musicians and vocalists adding some lovely touches throughout. With 13 tracks - and a reprise - and about an hour of music, this is certainly value for money and a must have for anyone into R&B, reggae and even gospel.
