Friendship with God is to be treasured and here's an album that powerfully explores that theme. Owen Deacon is a bit of a musical genius and 'My God Mon Ami' sees him writing and recording all the music captured here. On top of that, he's blessed with an emotional rasping soulful voice that wrings out every ounce of the emotions captured in his excellent song-writing. The most powerful example is on the album's central song, the laid back R&B of "Soul Expression" where he lets loose with a forceful vocal performance. There are some spine tingling moments on "This Is What I Pray" which is a prayer for deeper intimacy with God, whilst the more up tempo "Friend" with its stripped down sound again allows Owen's vocal prowess to shine as he celebrates the strength of friendship with God. Another favourite is "Somewhere", with its upbeat optimism making it the perfect closing track. Owen Deacon is a new name and this debut demonstrates that he has the chops to make an impact.
