Having started as a part of the illustrious African Children's Choir, Uganda born Omega Bugembe Okello is a talented singer and arranger. For her opening venture into jazz recording she has put together a band consisting of a pianist, bass player and drummer who have an accomplished and confident feel which runs throughout this five song EP. The highlight here is a powerful version of "Amazing Grace", which includes a verse in Lugandan (Omega's native language) and resonates with a sense of gratitude and joy in the fulsome grace of God. "What A Wonderful World" and "Summertime" are well arranged settings of these classics, yet the only thing which doesn't feel right in this collection of songs is the vocal track. The impression Omega gives is of an excellent, talented and powerful singer who might not be really suited to jazz. Technically there is nothing wrong with her performance, and she does have a great voice, but something is missing which is hard to put a finger on - perhaps a certain lack of passion?
