Nine Lashes formed in 2006 in Birmingham, Alabama but it wasn't until they signed to Tooth & Nail/BEC Recordings for their second album 'World We View' in 2012 that they started to gain mainstream recognition. Now on their fourth album, the four-piece have chosen to pursue a new musical direction that may leave some fans scratching their heads. Having never really fulfilled the promise that they showed on their early records Nine Lashes have experimented with their sound and 'Ascend' sees a dramatic change of direction. Gone are the hard rock/metal influences with the band exchanging their guitars for synths to create an electropop album. The opening three tracks set the scene with pumping dance beats and soaring synth riffs. "The Chosen Ones" brings the tempo down a bit with a more delicate acoustic guitar intro before the synths and drums kick back in for the chorus. There are a number of influences present through the record from the '80s synthpop of "Galaxy" to the dubstep beat of "Glorious". It does, at times, feel like they are trying to do too much and whilst the production is strong the blend between the vocals and the instrumentation doesn't always feel right. Having said that, the overall vibe is uplifting and positive and this is reflected in the lyrics focusing on the greatness of God and the joy of being in relationship with him. Nine Lashes have taken a risk with this record. It remains to be seen if it will pay off for them.
