In the 13 years since Frank Williams founded arguably the Deep South's premier gospel choir, the reputation of the Mississippi Mass has gone from strength to strength. This is by my reckoning their eighth album for Malaco and the ones I've heard in that series have been stuffed full of raw energy and Holy Ghost power: these guys really know how to have church! Amazingly the choir roster is over 150 according to the CD sleeve; I don't know how many are performing on this one, but it's another cracker, over 77 minutes of playing time, with a tight band, some talented soloists (even Founder Frank dusts off his tonsils and takes lead vocals on his own song "My God Said It"), and as always the choir are in perfect ensemble. In the aftermath of September 11, there's a certain patriotic flavour that might grate slightly this side of the pond (they go to town somewhat on "America The Beautiful"), but I quibble. If you love gospel choirs, this is one you can buy with confidence.
