Mike is a Welsh musical minister who's taken his trusty acoustic around the world, often playing places most of us only hear about on Tear Fund brochures. This, his most recent recording, is an amiable selection of his songs. The title track has some telling images though the arrangement, complete with a brass section and stacked backing vocals, is not entirely convincing. It's when he picks rather than strums that the effectiveness of his songs comes through, like on the haunting "Questioning", though again the arrangement is a tad fussy. Probably the best song here is "Titanic" which manages to use the images of the great disaster-at-sea to bring out a spiritual point. Mike is clearly a gifted wordsmith and fairly effective singer. With a bigger budget and a good producer he could make a superb album. In the meantime this do-it-yourself recording shows his potential.
