Machaira: An ancient bladed weapon referred to in Hebrews 4.12, "The word of God is living and active and sharper than a double edged sword" (just in case you were wondering). In this case Machaira is a four-piece blues band from Loomis, California, supported by the Kingdom Foundation in their mission work, such as a recent trip to Russia. In 1990 when Machaira started out, there were some young guys in the band; they left and by 2007 the average age had at least quadrupled. Using fairly simplistic blues riffs, and standard rock beats, Machaira have compiled an album of tracks written by the lead vocalist, Jon Brown. Jon's lyrical content is to be commended as he doesn't hold back such as on the title track which is a blatant call to "Walk In The Truth". However the deep sultry vocals don't have the feel or the nuances of Muddy Waters or a John Lee Hooker or even a Paul Butterfield although "Someday Soon" provides some relief as Paul Myers contributes some lighter lead vocals. Also, instrumentally there is a distinct lack of note-bending passion in the lead guitar work while the overall feel moves from laid back to downright tired. So, despite their undoubted heart for ministry this 2002 album doesn't really cut it.
