I have to confess that I loved the 'The Last Days' album from MC Tempo and played it to death on my Independents' Day programme. The Brighton-based rapper returns with this follow up which builds on the good things of its predecessor and then ups the ante. Where 'The Last Days' was a little rough production-wise, Tempo has now teamed up with producer Nathan Ironside to fine effect. He's also created a more commercial style so that his rap skills are effectively mixed with catchy grooves and memorable sung hooks. This works best on his re-workings of worship songs which sees him giving songs like "Happy Day", "River Of God", "Heart Of Worship" and "Awesome God" a hip-hop makeover. On paper this may sound like a musical recipe for serious cheese but on 'Direct From The Heart' the hip-hop worship shtick works really well. Additionally, Tempo weaves into the album his own material from the free-styling "Free" through to "Righteous Road". And it works really well all the way. This is MC Tempo making an album that demands some attention. Elsewhere rappers and worship leaders are working together in a live setting but this album looks like the most accomplished fusion of the two elements I've yet heard.
