Gospel's hugest sales phenomenon doesn't put a foot forward with his third album (actually, this was recorded before Kirk's Christmas set but Gospocentric had to delay its release as that stunning 'Kirk Franklin & The Family' refused to stop selling!). Personally, I never cared for the semi-spoken style that first got Kirk away so the opener leaves me cold but the title track with a thunderous backbeat and a rasping lead vocal from Darrell Blair would get corpses dancing (as a bonus there's an even funkier remix towards the end of the album). "Conquerors" is an eight minute plus ballad with Dalon Collins delivering an achingly soulful lead while "What I Think About Jesus" is a manic-tempo'd romp through the old gospel programme war horse that could have gone on much longer. On "Mama's Song" Kirk confesses that "I am not much of a singer but will do the best I can" and on the moving (some might say maudlin) ballad tribute to a departed mom shows he's only a mediocre singer compared with the awesome talents of the Family. A class gospel album destined for mega sales.
