Detroit's mighty Clark Sisters were one of the first acts I saw in concert after my Christian conversion and, demonstrating amongst other things the way the years flash by, here's Karen Clark-Sheard's teenage daughter launched onto the scene. And what a launch! 'I Owe You' is already a huge American gospel hit and deservingly so, being as it is a staggering showcase for KiKi's sinuously flowing vocals brought into pristine focus by top quality R&B production from some of the biggest names in urban music (Rodney Jerkins, Paul Allen, J Moss, Warren Campbell). I love that relentless groove on "You Don't Know", I love that insidiously catchy chorus on "Let Go", I love the vocoder effects on KiKi's voice on "Church Nite", and I love the powerful God messages of this groundbreaking album. Every bit as impactful as Mary Mary's "Shackles", this is a truly magnificent example of the way R&B gospel has developed to become as good (and often better) than anything in the mainstream marketplace. On the sleeve Mary Mary rave that "not only does KiKi have an amazing voice, but she's anointed by God." Such comments make the prospect of seeing KiKi in concert a mouthwatering prospect.
