This solo album from the Yorkshire-based singer/songwriter is not like most. It is not an album with a lead singer who possibly plays rhythm guitar with a huge dependency on their "backup" musicians. No, Kayla does everything herself here. She is a one woman band on stage, utilising looping and some crazy instruments to make interesting sounds. Although the first few tracks are rather mediocre and clinical with standard power chords on a guitar accompanied by faux '80s synths - the album picks up about half way through. Compare the slightly aged pop-rock sound of "So Help Me" with the chill-out electronica feel of "Dance With Me" to see just how much variation there is between the first and second halves of this album. "Can We Find Somewhere" is also a delightful example of the liberal application of harmonies that Kayla seems to love. Equally enjoyable is the melodic final track, "Secret Place". Once again it uses harmonies consistently throughout to great effect, resulting in a calming, pleasant feel. All in all, this album has its pitfalls but it's also capable of brilliant things, making it definitely worth a look.
