Reviewed by Ian Hayter Jump5 – oldest member Chris Fedun, aged 17 – as, no doubt you know, are a group of smiley, clean-cut teens from across the Atlantic who have already had outstanding success with their previous three CDs. With massive exposure on the Disney Channel and Radio Disney, they have shifted 600,000 units and look set to add handsomely to that total with this chirpy little offering. Brandon, Brittany, Chris, Libby and Lesley are, according their own website, “teen power pop sensations” and this 10-track CD (lasting just 33 minutes) is a great showcase for their energetic and glossily produced sound. Mark Hammond, producer of (among others) Avalon and Nicole Norderman, has got the best out of the quintet and their catchy, upbeat songs communicate a positive and inspiring message to teens and pre-teens who are already targeted by the big boys of the secular pop industry with songs that ooze sexuality and selfishness. Along with competent covers of Sister Sledge’s disco smash “We Are Family”, “Walking On Sunshine” and Earth Wind & Fire’s “Shining Star” are seven original songs of cool danceable pop whose lyrics are aimed at conveying “self-esteem and faith-based values which will inspire and empower kids.” It has to be said that the faith element is not the strongest aspect of this CD, but the music’s great and songs such as “Do Ya” and “Pressure” are certainly very healthy alternatives to much of what you’ll hear in the mainstream these days. For kids who like hi-energy pop and whose parents want them to imbibe a few positive values, then this is a must-have album. Enjoy it!
