In case you haven’t been swatting up your Christian music history (which, after a careful scrutiny of the Scriptures I have to report is not actually a sin) let me explain that Joy Electric is actually an American eccentric Ronnie Martin who makes electronic music while eschewing modern technology. So not for Joey computers and samples, he prefers old analogue moogs which give his layers of engaging rhythm a delightfully retro sound. Think of the Pet Shop Boys or Erasure at their most eccentric and you won’t be far wrong. He also brings in guest vocalists, like a rather engaging lady on the title track and like lyrics about unicorns and silver clouds and even a song eulogising the metronome! An acquired taste maybe but in his own way Joey is a retro genius.
