This latest album from that Californian eccentric Ronnie Martin, who as is his clique of fans will know, specialises in a retro synth sound offers here Ronnie's covers of nine recent pop hits. His interpretations of "Viva La Vida" (Coldplay), "Somewhere Only We Know" (Keane) and "Say It Right" (Nelly Furtado) are playful, but in truth, are slightly indulgent. My personal top song from this album is The Killers' "When You Were Young" which is really catchy with its light and fluent combination of sound effects. Something that was missing for me a bit were a few extra backing vocals to bring more variety into the melodies, even though Martin has a very pleasant, warm voice, this set is unlikely to increase Joy Electric's fanbase.
