Within the space of 18 months, three post-grunge outfits hit the Christian rock scene with outstanding debut albums. All three bands had a common thread, their lead singer told heart-wrenching but uplifting tales of redemption from drug addiction. Four years later and all three bands (Seventh Day Slumber and Day Of Fire being the other two) have produced follow-up albums that seem to have lacked the same kind of punch. Perhaps that lack of punch comes from their Tennesse/CCM style production - that likes to (in my opinion) polish a rough diamond until it more resembles a marble. A case of right producer, wrong band maybe? Or maybe it's wrong for me to review it as a rock album anyway - as a worship album it would certainly get a more positive review. Much of the album is worshipful, including one song being a worship cover. The production certainly lends to that worship sound, by taking the edge of their rockier moments. Whilst their Pearl Jam meets Nickleback sound is hardly unique, it is backed up by an honest and powerful lyricist. However, after telling us of his amazing transformation from being a drug addict, Vince Lichlyter now needs to find a different muse if he wants to keep our ear.
