John is a 50 year old head teacher who makes grown up melodic pop music where his well written songs speak to the heart and the lyrics are designed to encourage the listener. Produced by As If's Phil Goss, this is obviously an album that is restricted by budget but there's plenty of creativity on the production front and the result is uncluttered, clear and sensitive. One standout is "I Heard The Voice Of Jesus" which is mainly a sensitive piano ballad but suddenly bursts into life when Phil Goss contributes a gorgeous guitar solo. I like the catchy "God's Love" and the slight '60s undertones of "You Bring Peace" the best. Some tracks are wisely stripped down to bare acoustic presentation and these work well also. John works with a worship team but this is not a worship album though the songs are definitely Christ-centred and uplifting. Lyrically direct, John set out to communicate and has crafted an album that effectively does the job.
