The latest book from Iona Community's John L Bell is subtitled 'Shorter Songs For Worship' and contains sheet music for considerably more songs and chants than on the accompanying CD of the same name. Designed for "small choirs, social justice enthusiasts, multiculturalists and all who regard themselves as global Christians," Bell begins with a light hearted introduction and a prologue entitled "Deadly Threats & Solemn Warnings" which provides tongue-in-cheek advice to the user. In the main body of the book, home grown material and songs from across the globe are divided into four main sections (Gathering, Relating, Engaging and Responding) with the majority containing a short history of the song and guidelines on how to sing it. Bell also provides a short essay on each of the aforementioned sections which, although thought-provoking, reflects his own somewhat arrogant views on modern worship. For instance, sweeping statements such as "individualistic, feel-good devotion is simply the enemy of corporate worship" detract from the many valid points he makes elsewhere. What a shame.
