This Memphis-based worship leader has cut his teeth in local church and independent releases over recent years and now emerged with his "proper" debut album. Have to confess that in my visits to Memphis I've seen him play live and had a number of fellow Memphians extol his virtues. Now there's a proper opportunity to evaluate what he's about, it seems that in a city better known for its soul, Mr Horn does a good line in rock worship with a sound that mixes The Beatles with Delirious?. The result is an organic rock sound packed with catchy songs and lyrics that are a million miles away from the trite throwaway of so much modern worship. With a crisp production in place, there is plenty to enjoy and although not everything here would translate to your local church worship team, it's a worshipful uplifting album. "Embrace The Cross" is a majestic swaying song of worship with cool strings, "Mercy Comes In Like A Flood" is rootsy and catchy whilst "A Lion Has Roared" is powerful and rocky and prophetic. Horn does a good line in anthemic rocky worship songs but it's the moving title song which draws the listener into deeper intimacy and expectation which is one of the standouts here. If you like the sound of Tim Hughes and Chris Tomlin, here's another name that you need to add to your list and an album that is waiting for you to discover! This is a great point of departure for Jeremy Horn rather than a destination and I anticipate bigger and better things from him in the future. For now, start here and check this out.
