One of the biggest frustrations I have about worshipping in a church setting is how safe it all seems. We sing until we get to the end of the words on the screen and then go back to the top. I've always thought that the most dangerous worship is what happens when you run out of words and choose to simply launch out spontaneously but very few worship leaders risk pursuing this and few worshippers seem to know what to do when it happens. But I love it! So this album from Jeff Jansen lifted my heart because littered amongst the songs are spontaneous passages that reflect the freedom I long for my own spirit when I'm worshipping. The highlight for me has to be when "Psalm 103" stretches out into a spontaneous coda. Rootsy and acoustic in recording and organic in feel, this is a gorgeous warm worship album that is reminiscent of American outfit Mary's Den and early Kevin Prosch. Produced by former Steve Taylor drummer Cactus Moser and with songs as delicate and beautiful as "I Keep Falling In Love With You" and "Lover Of My Soul", 'Spontaneous' really hits the mark and this is a worship album packed with yearning intimacy and deep desire for God.
